No tuition fees, more courses in English and yearly rises up global rankings – German universities are a great place for international students, where one can apply for the Best Fields to study in Germany. But which subjects are they best at? By bringing together all these factors, we’ve come up with eight subjects which German institutions are clearly among the best in the world in.

These Best Fields to study in Germany are mostly:

1) Physics: Of the 102 Germans to win a Nobel Prize, 31 were given the award for physics. The Times has seven German universities in its top 100 for Physical Sciences. Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) leads the way in 19th place globally. And the QS World University Rankings puts six German institutions in the top 50, making physics the subject Germany ranks highest for. Famous German physicists range from X-Ray discoverer Wilhelm Roentgen to quantum physics pioneer Max Planck. So, one can find Physics as the Best Fields to study in Germany.

2) Chemistry: Germany’s top chemists have won 30 Nobel prizes between them. Stefan Hell (pictured) was the most recent, winning the award this year. Seven German universities are in the best 100 in the world for chemistry, according to QS. Germans have demonstrated their chemistry prowess by inventing aspirin and morphine.

3) Mechanical Engineering: Four German universities are in the Times top 100 for engineering, including Munich’s Technical University in 26th place. RWTH Aachen, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Technical University in Darmstadt also make the cut. This is backed up by the QS list which has seven German universities in its top 100 for mechanical engineering. Germany’s engineering heritage is reflected in inventions from the radio controlled watch to the car. So, one can find Mechanical Engineering as the Best Fields to study in Germany.

4) Philosophy: Ask someone to name a famous philosopher and they’ll probably reply with a German name, so it’s no surprise that German universities fared best in the QS rankings in philosophy – 11 of them made the top 100. Heidelberg’s Ruprecht-Karls University and Berlin’s Humboldt were top. Hegel, Schopenhauer and Schelling all studied at the Humboldt, while Heidelberg (pictured) even boasts a path named Philosophers’ Walk for solitary reflection.

5) History: The Times has three German institutions in the top 50 for humanities and history is one of their strengths. QS places eight in the top 100, with Berlin’s Free University and Humboldt University (pictured) leading the charge. Now if only they gave Nobel Prizes for history.

6) Life Sciences/Medicine: Four German universities are in The Times’ top 100 for life sciences, while three make the cut for health and medicine. Heidelberg is the top German university in both rankings for medicine. Germany’s medical heritage, perhaps because of its talent for chemistry, is long. After chemistry and physics, it is the subject Germans have won the most Nobel Prizes for with 24 awards. German doctors’ discoveries include Alzheimer’s disease and the adhesive bandage.

7) Literature: The Humboldt, Heidelberg, Munich’s LMU and Berlin’s Free University are among the best places in the world to study arts and humanities. Foreign writers have long been attracted to the birthplace of Goethe, Grass and Schiller for inspiration. Ten Germans have also won the Nobel Prize for literature. So, one can find Literature as the Best Fields to study in Germany.

8) Modern Languages: The Humboldt, Free University and LMU also place near the top of the QS list for the best places in the world to study modern languages. Germans speak an impressive range and level of foreign languages and start learning young. Seven of the country’s universities are in the top 100 for modern languages worldwide.
