5) History: The Times has three German institutions in the top 50 for humanities and history is one of their strengths. QS places eight in the top 100, with Berlin’s Free University and Humboldt University (pictured) leading the charge. Now if only they gave Nobel Prizes for history.

6) Life Sciences/Medicine: Four German universities are in The Times’ top 100 for life sciences, while three make the cut for health and medicine. Heidelberg is the top German university in both rankings for medicine. Germany’s medical heritage, perhaps because of its talent for chemistry, is long. After chemistry and physics, it is the subject Germans have won the most Nobel Prizes for with 24 awards. German doctors’ discoveries include Alzheimer’s disease and the adhesive bandage.

7) Literature: The Humboldt, Heidelberg, Munich’s LMU and Berlin’s Free University are among the best places in the world to study arts and humanities. Foreign writers have long been attracted to the birthplace of Goethe, Grass and Schiller for inspiration. Ten Germans have also won the Nobel Prize for literature.
